Lachin Resident Alleges Grave Desecration and Theft of Gold Teeth During Occupation

Baku: During ongoing court proceedings at the Baku Military Court, victim Mukhtar Hashimov stated that gravestones were destroyed and gold teeth were pulled from bodies during the occupation of the Jijimli village in the Lachin district.

According to Azerbaijan State News Agency, Hashimov recounted that he was forcibly displaced from the village due to the Armenian armed forces’ attacks on May 18, 1992. He alleged that Armenians killed local shepherd Mehdi Mahammadov in 1989 while he was grazing cattle. In 1992, the Armenians reportedly shelled the village extensively using modern arms, resulting in leg wounds for Hashimov and his baby daughter.

Hashimov further alleged that gravestones were destroyed, ancestors’ gold teeth were stolen, and historical and religious monuments were looted. Court proceedings are ongoing against Armenian nationals accused of committing war crimes, crimes against humanity, genocide, aggression, terrorism, and violations of the laws and customs of war. The charges also include financing terrorism, violent seizure and retention of power, and other serious offenses.
