International Literacy Day 2026 Celebrations to Be Held in Mexico

Mexico city: September 8 marks International Literacy Day, an annual event celebrated globally to emphasize the essential role of literacy in fostering a literate, just, peaceful, and sustainable society. Since its inception in 1967, International Literacy Day (ILD) has been observed on September 8 each year, as highlighted on UNESCO’s official website.

According to Azerbaijan State News Agency, this year marks the 60th anniversary of International Literacy Day, initially proclaimed by UNESCO in 1966 during its 14th General Conference. Celebrated under the theme ‘Literacy for people, the planet and prosperity,’ ILD 2026 offers a unique opportunity to evaluate progress, understand ongoing and new challenges, and shape future literacy agendas in an ever-evolving global landscape.

The global celebrations for ILD 2026 will be organized by UNESCO on September 8-9 in Mexico, in partnership with the Government of Mexico. The event will feature the award ceremony for the UNESCO International Literacy Prizes, recognizing exemplary literacy programs worldwide. The celebrations will also extend to local, national, and regional levels globally, with the main event in Mexico being accessible online in English, French, and Spanish.

Over the last sixty years, countries and partners worldwide have championed literacy as a fundamental human right and a pivotal force for peace and sustainable development. Building on these advancements, ILD 2026 will celebrate achievements, particularly those since 2015, while addressing remaining and emerging challenges. It will also serve as a platform to spotlight effective policies, practices, and partnerships aimed at advancing literacy for all, thereby supporting peaceful and sustainable societies.
