Baku:Ilham Aliyev’s election as President of the Republic of Azerbaijan on October 15, 2003, is considered a pivotal moment in the nation’s history, Speaker Sahiba Gafarova stated during a meeting of the Milli Majlis.
According to Azeri-Press news agency, Gafarova highlighted the significant impact of National Leader Heydar Aliyev, who returned to leadership in 1993 when Azerbaijan faced major challenges to its independence. His leadership helped eliminate the threat of disintegration, ensured socio-political stability, and strengthened state institutions. The adoption of the Constitutional Act on State Independence on October 18, 1991, was noted as a historic milestone.
Ilham Aliyev’s election marked the beginning of a new era for Azerbaijan, fostering the development of the state and following the path set by Heydar Aliyev. Under his leadership, the country has not only preserved past achievements but also reached significant milestones, including the successes in the 44-day Patriotic War and subsequent operations, which have restored Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity.
Currently, Azerbaijan is engaged in extensive reconstruction efforts in liberated territories, while also strengthening international relations and pursuing initiatives for regional stability and peace in the South Caucasus. The recent hosting of the 7th Summit of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia in Baku reflects the country’s growing international stature.
