Baku:Azerbaijan and Estonia are seeking to deepen their political, economic, and interparliamentary relations, with recent developments in the South Caucasus paving the way for improved regional peace, connectivity, and international partnerships.
According to Azeri-Press news agency, the Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Estonian Parliament, Marko Mihkelson, discussed these topics in an interview. The conversation highlighted the mutual interests between Azerbaijan and the European Union, demonstrated by the visits of the EU’s High Representative, Kaja Kallas, to Baku over the past two years. These visits indicate a strong EU interest in broadening its cooperation with Azerbaijan.
Mihkelson emphasized the importance of political will in addressing existing challenges and advancing relations. Estonia, as a small EU member state, is particularly interested in fostering peace and stability in the geostrategically important South Caucasus region, which aligns with broader EU objectives.
To further strengthen interparliamentary cooperation, Mihkelson mentioned his current visit to Baku, the first in 22 years, as a concrete step towards renewing contacts and building a more active framework for collaboration. Additionally, a friendship group from Tallinn is set to visit Azerbaijan in November, and an invitation has been extended to Azerbaijani counterparts for a reciprocal visit to Estonia. These exchanges aim to maintain regular dialogue and expand opportunities for parliamentary interaction between the two nations.
