Awaza:President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev will attend the Caspian Environmental Summit on October 9, 2026, at Turkmenistan’s Awaza National Tourist Zone as part of his working visit to Turkmenistan.
According to Azeri-Press news agency, the Summit, initiated by the President of Turkmenistan, aims to address the environmental condition of the Caspian Sea. It focuses on protecting the environment and enhancing cooperation among the littoral states.
The main agenda includes the environmental security of the Caspian Sea, the declining sea level, climate change effects, biodiversity protection, pollution prevention, and scientific research cooperation. The declining sea level is a significant concern, and Turkmen officials have stressed the need for collaborative scientific and practical activities among the five littoral states.
Strengthening regional cooperation among Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Russia, and Turkmenistan will be a key focus. The Summit is also crucial for advancing activities within the Tehran Convention, a primary regional legal framework for marine environment protection. Recent environmental conferences in Awaza have discussed issues related to the Convention’s implementation, biological resource monitoring, and modern environmental technologies.
The Summit was proposed by Turkmenistan on September 23, 2025, during the 80th session of the UN General Assembly, evolving into a high-level meeting on Caspian Sea environmental issues. A meeting of heads of state was announced at an event in Tehran on August 11, 2026, to be held in Awaza.
The Awaza summit is set to be an international platform for discussing the Caspian Sea’s environmental challenges and forming mechanisms for long-term cooperation. Documents from the Summit are expected to guide future cooperation in environmental security, biodiversity protection, and climate change adaptation.
