Wireless heart implants to be provided free of charge for Kazakh citizens

According to international statistics, 26 million people suffer from chronic heart failure (CHF) in the world. About 900 thousand new patients are diagnosed annually. Of this number, about 800 thousand patients need heart transplantation, of which between 7% and 50% of people die during the first five years of diagnosis without waiting for the donor heart. Transplantation is the gold standard in the treatment of this pathology, however, due to the shortage of donor organs, the use of mechanical support for the heart is actively developing. In this regard, the use of innovative technology – a fully implantable heart support system � has become a revolutionary breakthrough in the surgical treatment of CHF. Kazakhstan has become the first country in the world which performed the implantation of a mechanic heart.

Kazakhstan heart surgeons team under the leadership of Yuri Pya and partners from the Czech Republic, Israel, Italy and the United States successfully performed the unique surgery to implant an assisted circulatory device. The Fully Implantable Device (FIVAD) is the world’s first assistive device that allows patients to live without a direct connection to an external power source.

Today, this system of the auxiliary device of the left ventricle of the heart is the safest for patients, allowing them to move freely, which significantly reduces a number of complications and significantly improves the quality of life.

It should be noted that this case was the first in cardiac surgery practice and became unique in the world.

By the way, the implants for mechanical support of the heart are used everywhere, but all of them must have a wire coming out of the body in order to monitor the condition of the device and the heart, as well as for recharging.

According to Yuri Pya, such wires could carry an infection to the patient’s body because of an open wound, interfere with taking a shower and prevent them from swimming.

The first fully implantable device removes these and a number of other problems. The battery lasts for eight hours. At the time of charging the patient needs to wear a chest strap, all device data and heart indicators are shown at the patient’s special watches.

The patient practically returned to a normal lifestyle. He has the opportunity not only to do everyday activities, but even to swim, which was not possible when using other models of similar devices, Chairman of the Board of National Research Cardiac Surgery Center, MD, 27th President of the World Society of Cardiothoracic Surgeons (WSCTS), chief cardiac surgeon of the Ministry of Healthcare of Kazakhstan Yuri Pya said.

According to him, FIVAD has great prospects in changing the paradigm and approaches in the treatment of end-stage heart failure.

We have been working on the project for about ten years. When we introduce mass use of this device, it will be provided free of charge for Kazakhstan citizens as part of the guaranteed volume of free medical care – about 150 patients a year need it. The surgery is quite expensive, this is the first clinical operation, it’s difficult to talk about the financial side, Yuri Pya said.

The patient, born in 1994, became the first owner of the unique implant. He said that he had been waiting for the operation at the National Research Cardiac Surgery Center for a month.

In 2018, Ismail was diagnosed with dilated cardiomyopathy, a distension of the cavities of the heart, which can lead to sudden death.

Before the operation, he was only in his room on the bed. He could move from a bed to table, sit a little, go to the shower. This was all accompanied by severe shortness of breath. A person’s life was limited to the outside of the room. And now he can walk, swim Yuri Pya noted.

Now similar researches will be conducted in Europe and the USA. Once there they prove the safety of the device, it can be installed to all. According to the cardiac surgeon, this research will take at least a year. He noted that animals had been previously tested. They showed that the system is very stable.
