UNGAs 73 session began its work in New York

The 73rd session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA 73) has opened in New York. UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres reminded about the priorities of the UN and called on the world leaders to show their readiness for cooperation, who will arrive in New York next week. The UN heads concerned about continuing conflicts, political confrontation, deepening humanitarian crisis in some hotbeds of tension.

The theme of the session is “Making the United Nations Relevant to All People: Global Leadership and Shared Responsibilities for Peaceful, Equitable and Sustainable Societies”.

The main priorities of the 73rd session of the UN General Assembly are issues of further reform of the UN, conflict prevention, ensuring human rights, gender equality and overcoming injustice in the world.

The agenda of the session has included more than 175 issues in such areas as the maintenance of international peace and security, sustainable development, human rights, humanitarian assistance, disarmament, promotion of justice and development of international law.

Minister of Foreign Affairs and Migration of Ecuador, Mrs. Maria Fernanda Espinosa Garces, was elected as the Chairwoman of the General Assembly at the current session. In the course of her presidency, which will last one year, she intends to give priority to issues of migration, environmental protection, the rights of persons with disabilities, gender equality and promotion of sustainable development.

By the way, her presidency marks the first time a woman represents the Latin American and Caribbean region.

“My presidency will strive to bring the United Nations closer to the people, through effective, dynamic and meaningful communication that has relevance to the public, and which strengthens their sense of ownership and support for this Organization”, Maria Fernanda Espinosa Garces said at the opening of the 73rd session of the UNGA.

An important place in the work of the General Assembly will be taken by the theme of promoting economic development and adoption of global agreements on migration and refugees.

The first day of nine days of the high-level General Debate by world leaders begins on 25 September and will last until 1 October. Substantive issues will be addressed, including those related to the allocation of agenda items to the six main committees of the Assembly.

The high-level general debate of the UN General Assembly is being attended by Kazakhstan’s delegation headed by Foreign Minister Kairat Abdrakhmanov. A number of events in the multilateral and bilateral formats are planned for the period from 24 to 29 September. The speech of the Kazakh Foreign Minister is scheduled for September 28.

The central event for Kazakhstan within the session of the General Assembly will be the presentation of the Code of Conduct “Towards a world free from terrorism”. The document was developed on the initiative of President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev. The main goal of the Code is the creation of a broad international coalition of partner countries on counter-terrorism and the achievement of a world free of terrorism by 2045.

The Kazakh delegation will participate in various meetings in a multilateral format, including the opening of the General Debate of the 73rd Session of the UN General Assembly; Informal meeting of the Foreign Ministers of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence-Building Measures in Asia (CICA) with the transfer of the chairmanship from China to Tajikistan; a meeting of the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the member countries of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO); a high-level meeting devoted to the International Day for the Struggle for the Complete Elimination of Nuclear Weapons; a series of meetings under the aegis of the UN Security Council; Informal meeting of the Council of Ministers of the Economic Cooperation Organization; a ministerial meeting of the member states of the Group of Landlocked Developing Countries; a ministerial meeting of the group of friends of the UN Alliance of Civilizations.

Under the chairmanship of the United States, including President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Michael Pompeo, a series of open meetings of the UN Security Council will take place, in which Kazakhstan is a non-permanent member in 2017-2018.

Attention is drawn to a number of major events in the area of peacemaking, education, culture, health, in particular, a high-level meeting on the elimination of tuberculosis. The grand opening of the exhibition dedicated to the 90th anniversary of Chingiz Aitmatov is planned to be held.

K. Abdrakhmanov will hold a number of bilateral meetings with UN officials, foreign ministers and representatives of American and international business.

In general, the session of the UN General Assembly provides an opportunity to promote the implementation of a number of foreign policy initiatives of President of Kazakhstan N. Nazarbayev in the spheres of non-proliferation and disarmament, peacekeeping, sustainable social and economic development in the framework of achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and the UN 2030 Agenda.
