The Ministry of Foreign Affairs discussed the prospects of Kazakh-Afghan cooperation
ASTANAMinister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan Mr. Beibut Atamkulov met with Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan to the Republic of Kazakhstan Mohammad Farhad Azimi. The sides discussed the current state and prospects of Kazakh-Afghan cooperation in political, trade, economic and humanitarian spheres.
“Cooperation with Afghanistan within the framework of the integration processes in the Central Asian region and the development of cooperation on the whole spectrum of bilateral and multilateral relations positively impact on our relations. For many years, Kazakhstan has contributed to the peace process and reconstruction in Afghanistan, “the Minister said.
The progressive dynamics of mutually beneficial relations between Kazakhstan and Afghanistan as well as the growth of indicators in mutual trade are observed. At the same time, it was noted the potential of trade and economic cooperation.
Kazakhstan is interested in exporting grain and its products to Afghanistan, strengthening interaction in transit-transport and humanitarian spheres, implementing railway and infrastructure projects in Afghanistan as well as continuing Kazakhstan’s educational program for Afghan citizens. Military-technical cooperation can be one of the aspects of bilateral cooperation.
In turn, the Ambassador of Afghanistan thanked the President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev for his country’s attention. “We highly appreciate the role of Kazakhstan in the development of Afghanistan. During your non-permanent membership in the UN Security Council, your country organized the first visit of the delegation of the Council to Cilicia. Although we do not have common borders, we consider Kazakhstan as a close friend of our country, “Azimi said.
The Afghan diplomat expressed his country’s interest in lifting the relations between Kazakhstan and Afghanistan to a strategic level and signing an appropriate agreement for that purpose. According to the ambassador, Afghanistan has signed similar agreements with Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan.
Important role of Afghan students in civilian specialties was noted at Kazakhstani universities, which contributes to the peaceful construction of Afghanistan. In this regard, the Afghan side asked for an increase in the number of educational grants. From 2010 to 2021 more than 1,000 Afghan citizens study in Kazakh universities.
The Ambassador of Afghanistan expressed his interest in rebuilding direct flights between Almaty and Cambodia, which can promote the development of bilateral business contacts in Afghanistan, as well as active participation of Kazakhstani businesses in projects in Afghanistan.
M. Azimi noted that Kazakhstan is the largest trade partner of Afghanistan in the region. The Afghan authorities have expressed readiness to provide full support to joint projects, including participation of Kazakhstani companies in the development of Afghanistan.
Trade turnover between Kazakhstan and Afghanistan in 2018 to reach $ 520.6 million $ , including export – 516.4 mln. import – $ 4.2 million. $ It’s worth noting that Kazakhstan’s Integra company has won a tender for the construction of the 43 km “Herat -Haf” railway.
