‘The King of Opera’ Placido Domingo to arrive in Astana Opera

by January 9, 2017 Legal

The creative team of the Astana Opera has prepared a brilliant, memorable program of events for the EXPO 2017. Operalia will be a part of this celebration. Maestro Domingo’s tremendous contribution to the world operatic art is invaluable. Collaboration with the personality of this magnitude is a great honor for us, – said the General Director of the Astana Opera, Honored Worker of Kazakhstan Galym Akhmedyarov.

Operalia is open to singers of all vocal types (from bass to soprano) aged 18 to 32 years old. 40 talented vocalists from different parts of the globe will arrive in Astana. Preliminary selection by electronic applications will be held from December 2016 to February 2017. The contest itself will take place in three rounds and end with a gala concert with the participation of the finalists, accompanied by the Astana Opera Symphony Orchestra conducted by the Maestro Domingo.

Placido Domingo, who is known as ‘the King of Opera’ and ‘the greatest operatic artist of modern times’, has always taken a special interest in promising young singers, and seen the enormous difficulties they face in the beginning of their careers.

My purpose in Operalia is to help identify not only the best voices, but also to discover those singers whose personalities, characters and powers of interpretation show that they have the potential to become complete artists. Individuals such as these become tomorrow’s stars, noted Maestro Domingo.

The total prize fund is from 180 000 US Dollars. In addition to the winners of the I, II and III prize among male and female voices, the prizes include Birgit Nilsson Prize for performance in the German repertoire of R. Wagner and R. Strauss, Pepita Embil de Domingo and Placido Domingo Sr. prizes for the best zarzuela performance (a Spanish lyric-dramatic genre similar to operetta), the Audience Award and others.

Vice-President of Operalia Alvaro Domingo visited the Kazakhstani capital together with a delegation. Mr. Domingo noted that the Astana Opera has all the necessary facilities to hold a competition of this level.

I am very pleased with the result of our trip to Astana. The new, state-of-the-art opera house is equipped with the latest technology: great acoustics, rehearsal halls, dressing rooms, the orchestra pit and the stage. Extraordinary choir and symphony orchestra, as well as a positive disposition of each employee are very impressive. There was a successful, enjoyable for both sides meeting with the opera house management. I hope that our fruitful collaboration in the coming months will make this edition of Operalia even more successful than the previous ones, summarized Alvaro Domingo.

Let us remind that the competition was founded in Paris in 1993, where it was first held at the famous Palais Garnier. Since then, Operalia is held annually in different countries at the most prestigious venues. Among them are the legendary Milanese Teatro alla Scala, London’s Royal Opera House, Teatro Real (Madrid, Spain), Teatro Filarmonico (Verona, Italy), etc. The previous years’ winners, whose professional success was facilitated by the participation in Operalia, include world opera stars Joyce DiDonato, Rolando Villazon, Erwin Schrott, Sonya Yoncheva, Nina Stemme, Jose Cura, Joseph Calleja, Inva Mula among many others.
