Participants thanked Nazarbayev for hosting talks on Syria in Astana

“We emphasize the international meeting on Syrian settlement in Astana is an effective platform for direct dialogue between the government and the opposition, as required by resolution 2254 by the UN Security Council. We support the desire of the armed opposition groups to participate in the next round of negotiations to be held between the government and the opposition under UN jurisdiction in Geneva on February 8, 2017”, – the joint statement of Russia, Turkey and Iran reads.

It was also agreed to further cooperate in the Syrian settlement on the basis of the Astana platform.

“We call on all members of the international community to support the political process and implement all the measures agreed by resolution 2254 of the UN Security Council. We have decided to actively cooperate on the Astana platform with the complicity of the UN in order to ensure the Syrian political process. It may contribute to the global processes and the implementation of resolution 2254. We are grateful to the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Nursultan Nazarbayev and Kazakhstan for an international meeting on Syria in Astana”, – the statement reads.

The document reports the delegations of the three countries support the negotiations between the Government of the Syrian Arab Republic and the armed opposition in Astana on January 23-24.

“We appreciate the participation of Kazakhstan and the UN special envoy on Syria and reaffirm that we are committed to the sovereignty and integrity of the Syrian Arab Republic as a multi-ethnic, multi-religious country, the existence of which is guaranteed by the UN Security Council. In accordance with the resolution 2336 by the UN Security Council on the contribution to the minimization and reduction of violence, build confidence and ensure pent humanitarian access, the UN Security Council resolution 2165 of 2014 year, as well as the protection of the movement of civilians in Syria, it was decided to establish a tripartite mechanism, which should monitor full compliance with the ceasefire and the lack of provocation”, – read Kairat Abdrakhmanov.
