Nature and ecology protection projects to be financed in Kyrgyzstan by Kumtor
A commission has been set up in Kyrgyzstan to select projects and programs for environmental protection and conservation of natural resources.
Deputy Director of the State Agency for Environmental Protection and Forestry of the Kyrgyz Republic Eldiyar Sheripov said at a press conference that the commission will select projects and finance them from the account of the Nature Development Fund, which was created on the basis of a strategic agreement between the Government of Kyrgyzstan and Centerra Gold Inc in as part of the development of the Kumtor field.
The Fund now has $ 57.4 million in its account. Participants of the press conference explained that Centerra annually transfers $ 3.7 million to the Fund since 2017. In addition, $ 50 million was transferred at a time.
The main goals of the Fund are financing environmental projects and protecting the environment, said Eldiyar Sheripov. In this regard, the State Agency for Environmental Protection and Forestry offers four main priorities for projects. The first is the creation of landfill sites. Today we have 446 landfill sites, of which only 10-15% meet the requirements. The second treatment facilities; the third is the planting of green spaces; and the fourth is the creation of helium collectors.
Ulukbek Arstanbaev, Chairman of the Nature Development Fund, said that the commission will consist of 13 people, it will be led by First Deputy Prime Minister Kubatbek Boronov, the deputy director will be the State Agency for Environmental Protection and Forestry, members of the commission are the heads of the Ministry of Economy and the Ministry of Finance, two MPs and members of public observation councils.
