Minister of Healthcare Y. Birtanov meets with Director General of World Health Organization T. Ghebreyesus
During the meeting, Y. Birtanov proposed to hold a global conference on primary healthcare (PHC) “Towards Health for All” on October 25-26 in Astana.
The conference will be dedicated to the 40th anniversary of the historic Alma-Ata Declaration of WHO/UNICEF on primary health care, adopted in September 1978. It will give impetus to the further development of primary health care throughout the world and will contribute to the formation of a new role for Kazakhstan in modern global healthcare.
WHO Director-General, Tedros Ghebreyesus, in his turn, fully supported the proposal of Kazakhstan, noting the importance and significance of the event for the further development of health systems at the primary level and ensuring universal coverage of public health services throughout the world.
The Kazakh side also proposed to support the organization of the Conference at the political level with the participation of Heads of State and Government of the Member States of WHO.
Within the framework of the conference, it is planned to adopt the final document of the “Political Declaration on PHC”, which takes into account the challenges of our time. It is important to note that, with the assistance of WHO, it is also planned to hold an additional session to discuss the issues of the Conference and a technical briefing with diplomatic missions of foreign countries and international organizations at the 71st session of the World Health Assembly in May this year in Geneva.
After the meeting, the participants expressed confidence in the continuation of fruitful cooperation between Kazakhstan and the World Health Organization. Yelzhan Birtanov thanked Tedros Ghebreyesus for supporting WHO in implementing joint projects aimed at strengthening the healthcare system of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
