MFA promises to choose the most secure UN missions for servicemen of the Republic of Kazakhstan

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan Kairat Abdrakhmanov promised to choose the most secure UN missions in sending Kazakh servicemen.

It is necessary to emphasize that in considering the matters of participation in UN missions, we take into account such an important factor as the security of our servicemen, That is, we will choose the most secure missions. Undoubtedly, all this work will be carried out in close cooperation with the Parliament, as stated in the Constitution and the Law On Peacekeeping Activity, � Kairat Abdrakhmanov said during the government hour in the Majilis.

He recalled that, in accordance with the mandate of the Parliament, the practice of sending Kazakhstani military observers to the UN mission began in 2014. In particular, it is the UN mission to monitor the referendum in the Western Sahara, as well as the mission in CAte d’Ivoire, which saw service of 11 people. Four observers are currently serving in the Western Sahara. The Minister noted that this is a special mission, which was established by the UN in order to observe the planned referendum in this part of the world.

“At the same time, a legal framework has been created. In June 2015, the Law “On Peacekeeping Activity” was adopted. This happened at a very important moment, at the height of our campaign for election to the UN Security Council, � he added.

Recall, from January 1, 2017, Kazakhstan works in the UN Security Council as a non-permanent member for the coming two-year period. March 2, 2017, marked the 25th anniversary of Kazakhstan’s membership in the UN.
