Measles get sick more often unvaccinated children


The Ministry of Health of the Republic of Kazakhstan: the only effective measure to prevent measles is vaccination.

– In the city of Astana, there is a seasonal increase in the incidence of measles, which is characterized by the autumn-winter season. In the epidemiological process, 90% involve unvaccinated children under 1 year of age and between the ages of 1 year and 6 years. Pregnant women are also at risk for measles. Vaccination is the only effective measure to prevent measles, said the head of the Public Health Department of Astana, Sadvakas Baygabulov, in the Central Communications Service.

According to the speaker, for the first 10 months of the current year 19,144 children were vaccinated with the first vaccine against measles, that is 83.3% and revaccinated at the age of 6 years – 15,220 children, that is 78.6% of the target group. Immunizations against measles are given to children free of charge at the age of 1 year and 6 years.

In the city of Astana there is a sufficient number of vaccine doses for routine immunization of children at 1 year, 6 years, as well as for vaccination of non-vaccinated persons who have come into contact with measles. There are 25,000 of them. All measles vaccine quality, has been certified in Kazakhstan.

Recall that measles is a viral infection transmitted by airborne droplets from a sick person. Its distinctive symptoms and signs: high temperature – 38-40 C lasting from 4 to 7 days, loss of appetite, severe weakness, dry cough, and signs of ARVI – runny nose, cough, red eyes and tears and a gradual rash on the skin from head to toe . Measles is dangerous due to complications, such as otitis, pneumonia, encephalitis.

According to the Department of Public Health of Astana, in November 2018, 38 suspicious cases of measles were recorded in the capital, 20 of them were children not vaccinated due to the age of one year, 8 – from 1 to 6 years, 5 cases when parents refused vaccination and 2 cases are now being clarified.

– Currently, 35 children are being treated in the children’s infectious diseases hospital, their condition is satisfactory. 3 children have already been discharged. At 15, the laboratory confirmed the diagnosis of measles. In the outbreaks of contact, 37 people were covered by vaccinations. The situation in the capital is under the control of the Public Health Service of Astana and primary health care organizations, Sadvakas Baygabulov said.

A 31-year-old man with symptoms of measles is also on treatment in Astana.

The disease statistics for years in Astana is as follows: in 2013, 8 cases were recorded, in 2014 – 50, in 2015 – 396, in 2016 – 6, in 2017 – 0.

In case of suspected measles disease, you should immediately seek medical help in infectious hospitals of the city, and for prevention it is necessary to air the premises more often, to carry out wet cleaning and, of course, to lead a healthy lifestyle.
