Kyrgyz, Tajik Presidents discuss border situation
President of Kyrgyzstan Sooronbay Jeenbekov held phone conversation with Tajik leader Emomali Rahmon.
The Presidents discussed the situation at the Kyrgyz Tajik state border, the Kyrgyz President’s press service said.
Sooronbay Jeenbekov stressed the need to maintain a stable situation at the common border, adding that citizens’ everyday conflicts have become very sensitive.
There has been, is and will continue to be a centuries old friendship between the Kyrgyz and Tajik. We should not allow the situation on the border to escalate. Unfortunately, conflicts on the border territory have recently become more frequent. The day before, another incident occurred at the Kyrgyz Tajik border area, Sooronbay Jeenbekov said.
The Kyrgyz leader noted the importance of conducting public awareness campaigns in order to prevent such cases.
He stressed that as a result of the joint investigation, the perpetrators of the border conflict should be punished.
Jeenbekov underlined the importance of accelerating the process of delimitation and demarcation of the Kyrgyz Tajik state border.
During the telephone conversation, the two leaders discussed topical issues of bilateral cooperation and priority plans for the near future.
On Jan. 10, 2020 at 1 a.m., unknown citizens of Tajikistan threw stones at the cars of two Kyrgyz citizens on the Osh Batken Isfana highway.
At 2:40 a.m. shots were fired at the section of the Kok Tash border post in the Dakhma area from the Tajik human settlements, which forced the Kyrgyz side to begin evacuating women and children.
The shots were stopped at 8 a.m. According to official data, the situation at the station is now relatively stable.
