Kazakhstan ready to host XXVIII World Winter Universiade

Sport, transport and public facilities, as well as urban services, are fully ready for the 2017 Universiade in Almaty. This was announced at the Government meeting focused on the preparations for the Universiade.

According to Almaty akim B.Baibek, 57 of 60 applied countries have been accredited, which is itself a record for winter universiade. 45 countries will enjoy visa-free regime, 12 countries remaining will obtain visas through simplified procedure.

As for infrastructure, all the new facilities are commissioned, the existing facilities have been modernized; there is only a little work on the visual design. In addition, there is a special activities aimed at improving the service both in the athletic village and in the city.

The village will be fully ready by January 20. The first teams to arrive are of Kazakhstan and Canada � on January 23. The main peak of arrivals is expected on January 26 � more than 700 athletes from 24 countries. 2,200 athletes in total will arrive with 1,000 accompanying guests, coaches, doctors and officials among them.

January 25-29, the athletic village holds welcome ceremonies for arriving teams. The Mayor of the athletic village is Olympic champion Serik Sapiyev.

On the eve of the Universiade, the design and service of the Almaty airport and railway stations have been significantly improved. These facilities have been inspected several times to improve the quality of services, the interior, health and anti-terrorist security. All problematic issues have been solved. The 100% readiness will be provided by January 20. Similar work was carried out with regards to catering and hotels.

Prepared are also Almaty, Universiade and restaurants handbooks; 24.7-urban operations staff, call center, which provides all the Universiade-related information.

The World Winter Universiade will take place in Almaty, January 29 � February 8. More than 2,000 athletes from 60 countries of the world will participate in the upcoming competition, which will play 86 sets of medals out in 12 sports.
