Government approves draft State Program on Countering Religious Extremism and Terrorism for 2018-2022

Deputy Chairman of the Committee for National Security of Kazakhstan, Major-general Nurgali Bilisbekov, informed that the purpose of the program for 2018-2022 is to ensure the safety of the individual, society and the state by preventing manifestations of religious extremism and threats of terrorism.

Since 2013, 202 commissions have been working in the country to eliminate the causes and conditions for the spread of the ideology of religious extremism and terrorism, and organize targeted information and explanatory work.

According to the information provided, more than 96,600 events with a total coverage of more than 8.1 million people have been conducted in this direction.

As a result of the work carried out, it is noted that 755 “jihadists” have been moved to moderate positions. At the early stage of the preparations, 38 violent extremist acts of a terrorist nature have been prevented. 384 students have been returned from questionable theological educational institutions abroad.

Also, a draft of the State Program on Countering Religious Extremism and Terrorism in the Republic of Kazakhstan for 2018-2022 was prepared in accordance with the instructions of the Head of State.

The development of the project takes into account the analysis of the results of the implementation of the State Program for 2013-2017, the analysis of the conditions and factors that give rise to the threats of extremism and terrorism, best international practices, proposals of state bodies and NGOs and public associations.
