Education Ministry: More than 40% of schools will switch to trilingual education in 2018
Deputy Minister of Education and Science Askhat Aimagambetov reported on the preparedness of Kazakhstan’s schools to switch to trilingual education.
It is planned that in the 2018-2019 school year, about 2 thousand schools or 41% of general education schools, where there are grades 10-11, will switch to teaching one of four or all four subjects (chemistry, physics, informatics, biology) in English, Askhat Aimagambetov said during a meeting in the Nur Otan party.
According to him, by September 1 of this year more than 7000 teachers will master the level of “B2” and will be ready to start teaching.
At the same time, the Deputy Minister noted that trilingualism is introduced only in those schools that are ready for this.
We take into account the degree of readiness of schools, children, and the availability of relevant literature. Last year, at the beginning of the year, when we announced to schools, regions that wish to participate in this experiment, we received more than a thousand applications. We selected and looked at whether there are certain opportunities there, whether there are adequate teachers there, whether there is educational literature, and selected 510. That is, today the Ministry does not have the task (to switch to teaching in English – author’s note) in any way. There are no definite indicators that must be reached. It is important for us to qualitatively switch to teaching in English, A. Aimagambetov added.
In the academic year 2019-2020, as the Deputy Minister said, it is expected that all the full-fledged schools of district centers, specialized organizations will switch to trilingual education that is about 65% of schools.
