D. Nazarbayeva Discussed the Problem of Rational Use of Water Resources between Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan

Chairperson of the Senate Dariga Nazarbayeva received Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Kyrgyz Republic to Kazakhstan Zheenbek Kulubayev.

The Diplomat extended to the Head of the Senate an invitation from the Chairman of Zhogorku Kenesh Dastanbek Zhumabekov to make an official visit to Kyrgyzstan.

“Today, Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan are engaged in an active political and economic dialogue. Last year, the President of Kazakhstan made a state visit to Kyrgyzstan, during which he held talks with President of the Kyrgyz Republic S. Zheenbekov. The agreements reached gave a new significant impetus to the development of bilateral relations and identified promising areas of partnership,” Zh. Kulubayev said.

During the conversation, Zheenbek Kulubayev noted the high contribution of Yelbasy Nursultan Nazarbayev to the stabilization and settlement of the political situation in Kyrgyzstan. “We do not have any contradictions, we try to act in international dialogues,” he said.

Speaking about economic cooperation, the Ambassador of the Kyrgyz Republic said that during the talks between the heads of the two countries, an agreement was reached to increase the trade turnover to USD 1 billion. “To stimulate export import operations, it is proposed to establish a logistics center for the registration and processing of goods. To date, this topic is being finalized with the relevant ministries. This will be a profitable cooperation on agricultural exports,” the diplomat said.

Dariga Nazarbayeva supported this initiative and noted that the logistics center on the border is needed, as it will help expand trade and economic cooperation.

In addition, Zheenbek Kulubayev touched upon the resumption of air traffic between Nur Sultan and Bishkek, and also stressed the need to establish customs cooperation between the two countries.

The Head of the Senate noted that there is a need to review the customs legislation of the two countries. “Let’s stop the flow of contraband, let our business earn money and make smuggling unprofitable. The receipt of cheap goods causes damage to a bona fide business, D. Nazarbayeva said.

In addition, the Chairperson of the Senate raised the issue of rational use of water resources in the region.

“We have a common problem water. As the planting season approaches, our farmers are beginning to suffer from a lack of irrigation water. This reduces the yield of our farmers. This is a very sensitive issue. It is important that the two parties come to a common solution. We are concerned that an entire district is suffering from water problems. It is a pity that such barriers exist and problems have not been solved for years,” D. Nazarbayeva said.

Following the meeting, the Speaker of the Senate proposed to activate the work of the inter parliamentary working group to develop common approaches to solving the problem of water balance.
