Children’s medicine in Kazakhstan made significant progress in 25 years
In recent years the life expectancy of children with cancer has increased thanks to the medical advances, and a substantial part of their can achieve recovery.
“For 25 years 32 000 Kazakhstani children have received the rehabilitation. Over the past five years there was a steady trend towards the reduction of child mortality by almost 2 times (10.3 per 1,000 live births in 2016) and infant mortality (8.5 per 1,000 live births in 2016). In the dynamics for the last 10 years the mortality of children under 1 year from congenital malformations decreased by 1.5 times, which is associated with the improved perinatal diagnostics and improved methods for surgical interventions. To date, the survival rate of newborns with congenital malformations is 86%. One of the achievements in preserving the health of the child population is the development of tertiary care in neonatology”, the Ministry of Health of Kazakhstan reported.
The Ministry assured that in order to achieve these goals Kazakhstan introduced effective perinatal care, integrated management of childhood illness recommended by the WHO, regionalization of perinatal care, clinical protocols, standards of diagnosis and treatment based on evidence-based medicine improved, maternity and children’s hospitals are equipped with modern equipment and the whole spectrum of drugs, neonatal surgery, including cardiac care to newborns, pregnant coverage of all perinatal and neonatal genetic screening of newborns within the guaranteed volume of free medical care develops.
“Kazakhstan develops children’s cardiac surgery and interventional cardiology. Today, 145 cardiac surgical beds for children with congenital heart disease (CHD) and 28 cardiac intensive care beds for this group of patients have been organized. Every year in Kazakhstan for 1000 babies 6-8 children with CHD are born. Annually more than 2000 open-heart operations, including 3-4 difficulty levels, and more than 400 endovascular surgical interventions are carried out”, the message reads.
We add that the country established the National focal center for the implementation of effective technologies recommended by the WHO, organized the regional training centers at the regional perinatal centers and children’s hospitals to provide continuing professional development of health professionals on effective technologies. In addition, the Republican center of knowledge assessment skills, training medical practitioners and 6 simulation centers at medical schools were opened. Kazakhstan has the Republican sanitary aviation, using modern forms of communication, telemedicine, Skype, etc. to ensure access to care for children in remote areas of the country.
“Since 2012 Kazakhstan has introduced the transplantation of hematopoietic stem cells in the treatment of children with severe oncological diseases and hematologic diseases. 67 transplants were carried out. The overall effectiveness of transplantation was approximately 60.0%, which is a good result for a short period of introduction of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation”, the Ministry of Health informed.
Also the official report noted that the country implements programs to train pediatric staff constantly. Targeted training of neonatologists and resuscitation is carried out, mentoring, training of physicians in a short training modules are introduced. In addition, close cooperation with foreign counterparts in terms of training of specialists using the latest treatment protocols, conducting master classes with leading specialists clinics and abroad was reached.
