Bean festival in Kyrgyzstan’s Talas town
Kyrgyzstan’s Talas town hosted on Nov.23, 2019 the Buurchak Feast 2019 bean festival with the participation of local farmers and entrepreneurs, the press service of the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA) said.
Agricultural products and machinery were presented at the event.
Local residents and guests of the event were particularly interested in a variety of bean products, produced with the support of the One Village-One Product (OVOP) JICA Project.
According to Akihisa Haraguchi, the Project’ chief adviser, in addition to product development, there is need to promote products so that local producers can generate income.
Therefore, it is necessary to pay attention to the quality, attractiveness and marketability of the products and to the demand both in the domestic and international markets.
In addition, other products developed using the resources of Talas Oblast within the framework of the OVOP Project, such as dried prunes, churchkhela (traditional Georgian cuisine candle-shaped candy), honey, etc., were also presented at the festival.
The Buurchak Feast 2019 was organized jointly with the Talas Oblast state administration and the JIA Association of Young Entrepreneurs.
Governor of Talas Oblast Marat Murataliyev noted the importance of processing of agricultural products, and emphasized the role of the OVOP Project in the development of new products with the use of Talas beans.
About 80% of Talas Oblast residents grow beans.
In 2013, Kyrgyzstan became one of the ten largest bean exporters in the world, and the share of external bean trade exceeded 4% of the total export volume.
