Astana will host the European Student Debate Championship
Astana debaters achieved the right to host the European Championship in 2020 in Astana, reports ortcom.kz with reference to the Kazinform international association.
2018 was remembered by the debate community of Astana by an incredible success – according to the Astana Debate Union, the debaters of the capital won the right to host the European Debate Championship in 2020 in Astana.
The European University Debate Championship, the EUDC (European Universities Debate Championship) is the second largest student debate event, second only to the World Championship.
More than 200 teams from higher educational institutions from all over Europe take part in the tournament, including universities such as Oxford, Cambridge, Moscow State University and Sorbonne. Rounds of the tournament will be held in the British parliamentary format. According to the format, four teams, each of which is represented by two speakers, consider and discuss this or that resolution from two positions: the side of the so-called government stands for the thesis, while the side of the opposition must challenge it.
The main subtlety of student debate is that the themes of resolutions, except for the judges, are unknown to anyone beforehand and are announced 15 minutes before the start of the game, and the positions of the teams are chosen by drawing lots. Thus, student debates train the ability to think quickly, defend their arguments and look at problems from different perspectives.
Debates serve as an effective way of developing critical thinking, broadening one’s horizons, and the ability to professionally defend one’s point of view and improve oratory. Debates also raise students’ awareness of current issues: after all, to be a successful debater, you need to be well-versed in a variety of topics – from the details of international trade to the subtleties of European Union policy.
Thanks to numerous international tournaments like EUDC, students from all over the world get acquainted with the cultures of countries, find friends and like-minded people from other parts of the world.
Holding Astana EUDC 2020 is a huge step forward for the debate community of Kazakhstan and an excellent platform for Kazakhstani youth to express themselves, considers Astana Debate Union.
