Astana Process: Issues discussed at the 13th meeting of the Syrian negotiation process

Today in NurSultan the second meeting of the Syrian negotiations took place. Starting from 2017 the Astana process has begun with the support of the President Nursultan Nazarbayev. At today’s meeting it was announced that the next international meeting on the settlement of the crisis in Syria will take place in October within the framework of Astana process. This was stated in a joint statement of the host countries Iran, Russia and Turkey at the 13th Astana Process. The statement consists of 13 items.

The statement was read by Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan Roman Vasilenko.

In the statement, three guarantors have reaffirmed their sovereignty to the sovereignty, independence, territorial independence of the Syrian Arab Republic, as well as the purposes and principles of the UN Charter.

Reflecting on the casualties among the civilians, they agreed to take concrete measures on the protection of civilian population in accordance with international humanitarian law norms and the security of military men in and out of the zone of the Idlib Exit.

He also discussed the situation in the northeast of Syria and noted that achieving longterm stability and security in the region is possible only by respecting the sovereignty and territorial independence of the country.

In this regard, he refused to attempt to create new realities on the ground with the idea that the fight against terrorism, including the idea of illegal selfgovernment. We expressed our firm opposition to the separatist plans aimed at violating the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Syria that threaten the national security of neighboring countries. We expressed our conviction that there was no military solution to the Syrian conflict and the resolution of the Syrian National Dialogue Congress in Sochi, with the support of the UN Security Council Resolution 2254, the Syrians themselves we have confirmed the support for the process, the statement said.

In addition, the official statement said that in accordance with the decisions of the Syrian National Dialogue Congress in Sochi, detailed consultations on forming and running the constitutional committee in Geneva and the Office of the Special Representative of the SecretaryGeneral of the United Nations SecretaryGeneral Harry Pedersen were held.

In addition, the statement used the participation of Iraqi and Lebanese delegations as a new observer in Astana process.

In addition, the statement expressed gratitude to the Kazakh authorities for holding the 13th session of the Astana Process on Syria.

The next format of the Astana format on Syria will be held in NurSultan in October 2019, the statement said.

In turn, the Permanent Representative of the Syrian Arab Republic to the United Nations Bashar alJaafari said that the statement was the most effective of the previous statements on political content.
