8 thousand new terms approved in Kazakh language in 3 years

by April 4, 2017 Legal

The total number of terms approved by the terminology commission was 18 thousand. This was reported by Deputy Chairman of the Committee on Language Development and Socio-Political Work of the Ministry of Culture and Sport Galymzhan Meldeshev at the press conference following the Government meeting.

In 2016, a single electronic terminology base began its work. In accordance with the Presidential instructions, the terminology commission reviewed many terms. Some cause disagreement in society. For example, words such as a fountain, piano, pianoforte, balcony, are used in oral speech as “shaptyrma”, “burkak”, “su burkak”, “kuy sandyk”, “kyltima”.

We did not approve them. Thus, it would be right to use international variants, not translations. Someone sometime translated these words, so they remained fixed in the society, Mr. Meldeshev clarified.

He also noted that the National terminology commission together with the National Committee for Metrology and Standardization will have to work hard to bring all terms to the same standard. At the same time, it should not be a primary task to translate all the established international terms into the Kazakh language.

Among them are words subject to assimilation, for example: samovar samauyr, train poyiz. If we do not translate all words that fall on us from all languages, especially the West, in a few years there will be a big problem. We must, going off of the character, mentality, perception of Kazakhs, translate words where possible. For example, we translate the word accident as apat. But the word apat has a broader meaning more fit to the word catastrophe. Avariya (accident) is an Arabic word, meaning damage (zakym ketiru). Therefore, every time we have to get to the depth of the word and make a meaningful translation, Mr. Meldeshev said.

His idea was supplemented by Director of the National Coordination-Methodological center for Language Development Yerbol Tleshev.

The Terminological Fund of Kazakhstan should be increased in order for the state language to take an active part in all spheres of life. In China in every branch of industry there are around 50 thousand terms. Terminology science in Kazakhstan is sufficiently developed and does not lag behind other countries. The sole fact that at its roots stood the great and talented Akhmet Baitursynov predicts its big future. Especially since the Kazakh language is very rich, Y. Tleshev noted.

In 2017 it is planned to improve the website, the etymology of words will be introduced, and terms approval in the future will be relied on international practice.
