4 KILLED AS SUV PLUNGES INTO GORGE IN NORTHERN INDIA
At least four people were killed and three others injured when their sports utility vehicle (SUV) skidded off a mountain road and rolled down a gorge in the northern Indian state of Himachal Pradesh, Xinhua news agency reported the police as saying Friday.
The accident occurred at Dona in Nankhari, more than 100km from state capital Shimla.
“The SUV ferrying the seven people plunged into the deep gorge after its driver lost control of the vehicle while negotiating a sharp bend late Thursday night.
Four died on the spot while the injured were hospitalised,” local police chief Omapati Jamwal told the media.
He said the driver was booked for rash and negligent driving.
The accident came a day after another SUV veered off the road and fell into a gorge near Rohtang Pass on a highway connecting the state’s resort town of Manali with Indian-controlled Kashmir.
In that crash, 11 people wre killed.
India has the highest number of road fatalities in the world. Road accidents occur mostly due to poor driving or badly maintained roads and vehicles.
