‘We are living in a challenging time. The increase in urbanization, climate change requires different solutions from us,” Anar Guliyev, Chairman of the State Committee on Urban Planning and Architecture of the Republic of Azerbaijan, said during the panel discussion on the Urban Context – Built Environment, Risk and Resilience on the opening day of the Baku Climate Action Week, APA reports.
He noted that we should design cities as sustainable cities in the future: ‘70% of emissions are generated in cities. We need to build cities to be more efficient. Climate-resilient urban planning is one of the key priority areas in Azerbaijan. The Baku Master Plan 2040 can serve as a model for Azerbaijan. Proposals for sustainable urbanization have already been put forward. Numerous multisectoral approaches have been reflected in this. Collaboration between various sectors is fundamental here. As a State Committee, we have adopted new standards related to the environment and digitization. Together with the IPCC, we have
initiated the Green Building initiative. Several construction companies have already committed to this. The zero waste concept is already being implemented in the liberated territories. The health of a city depends not only on its infrastructure but also on its economy and the quality of life of its residents.’
