BAKU: President Ilham Aliyev emphasized Azerbaijan’s commitment to addressing the challenges faced by small island developing states during his speech at the Leaders’ Summit on Climate Change at COP29. He highlighted Azerbaijan’s efforts over the past four years as chair of the Non-Aligned Movement, providing financial and humanitarian aid to over 80 countries, including 20 small island states.
According to Azeri-Press News Agency, President Aliyev noted the significance of the Baku Communique, adopted after discussions with leaders from the Bahamas, Congo, and Tuvalu earlier this year. The communique called for a meaningful outcome at COP29, emphasizing the necessity of accessible climate finance. The Azerbaijani leader also mentioned the achievements in operationalizing the Loss and Damage Fund in Baku this September, urging the completion of this process to ensure financial support reaches countries in need, particularly small island states.
